
The Bandung Contemporary Art Awards (BaCAA) is in the first place to stimulate the development of contemporary visual art in Indonesia, leading to a place on the international map. Attention will be given to furthering the participation of award winners in important art venues. Artists eligible for the award are young emerging talented artists who have exhibited artworks at established galleries, public art spaces, or new art spaces with clear programs.
Bandung Contemporary Art Awards #01 [BaCAA #01] has been successfully implemented leading to more visibility for the emerging artists selected as the finalists. The winner BaCAA #01 had received the award of 100.000.000 rupiah. Each of the three other best selected artists had experienced or is experiencing new environment and new s as part of his/her award that enrich his/her artistic life. One went to Venice Biennale in May-June 2011, another one is taking an artist residency in Center for South East Asian Art, Passau, Germany 5 July – 2 October 2011, while the last one is having a studio project in Berlin, Germany.
ArtSociates under the Foundation AB now announces BaCAA #02 to be executed in the year of 2011/2012. The award for the best artist will be given in April 2012 and the other three bests to be allocated within 1 year after the announcement of the award. ArtSociates will organize the exhibition of artworks selected as finalists. In this second year, the awards are still given to emerging Indonesian artists. The awards will be developed further to include International artists and so to let Indonesian artists and artworks participate and compete at an international level.
Winners & Awards
The BaCCA #02 will be presented in March/April 2012. One winner will receive the sum of 100,000,000 Rupiah and the other three bests will receive either packages for art trips or artist residencies in Asia or Europe with. A residency of 3 months will include a return air ticket, housing, living expenses, reasonable art material. When possible a small art exhibition will be held during the artist residency. The awards will encourage more artist residencies than an art trip. When an art trip is chosen, total cost for such a trip should not exceed 35,000,000,- rupiah. 25 of the best artworks will be selected for exhibition afterwards.
Eligibility
Each applicant for the award 2012 must be an Indonesian artist or an artist groups residing in Indonesia and is actively pursuing a career as a visual artist.
By the first of April 2012, the participating artists or artist group members to the award are required to be less than 40 years. These artists or artist groups must have records of at least 3 exhibitions in the past 3 years in three good venues referred above.
Theme
Theme for the first award is rather loose but we aim at a combination of a great idea and an excellent execution.
Procedure and rules
The artworks submitted are considered by the participating artists or groups to be the best artworks produced within the past 2 years before the announcement of the awards. In the case for this second
awards, the artworks should be produced in the years of 2010 and 2011. These artworks belong to the artists or artist groups and should be available for sale. Each artist or group is allowed to submit a maximum of 1 artwork.
· For each 2D artwork, the dimension does not exceed 6m2 (e.g. for the maximum dimensions: 2mx3m, 1.2mx5m, 4mx1.5m, etc).
· For each 3D artwork, its height does not exceed 3m while the width x depth does not exceed 3m2 (e.g. for the maximum dimensions: 3mx2mx1m, 3mx2mx1.5m, etc).
· For each video, its duration does exceed 10 minutes.
By submitting an artwork for the competition the artist expresses to agree with the rules of the award. To enter a pre-selection of the competition, the artist must submit a high resolution photograph of the artwork together with an updated artist Portfolio (CV) and brief description of the art work by the artist.
The submission can be done electronically or by post in CD, and sent to the organizer. [The total size
of the submitted photograph and portfolio must be less than 1MB when they are submitted electronically.] The photograph should be in jpg format and be given a name in the following format:
“ Name-of-artist + title-of-artwork + year + medium + size (hight x width or hight x width x depth) “
(e.g. Joko-Sumarjo Cahaya-di-ruang-kosong 2010 Paper-polyurethane-asphalt 150x200x10)
The name of the file for the portfolio should be in the format:
“ Name-of-the-artist + city-of-residence + date-of birth “
(e.g. Joko-Sumarjo Jogjakarta 1958-04-10)
The brief description of the art work does not exceed 300 words referring to the concept that motivate the artist to create the work and when needed including the use of artisans as a part of the art concept and its execution.
Based on the photograph, artist’s portfolio, the Jury will select at most one hundred (100) applicants
and request them to send the artworks to the organizer.
Deadlines for submission
Photograph of the artwork, brief description of the work and artist’s portfolio must be received by 18 November 2011.
At most one hundred (100) selected artworks must be received by 27 January 2012.
Jury
Members of the Jury of the competition will act as members for two successive years. To stimulate
growth and an extension to an international event, a next successive Jury will be formed taking into
account the recommendation of the past two year Jury. For the first two years the members of the

Announcement & Exhibition
Announcement of the result of the selection of the 25 artworks will be published in the media with notification to the artist by 15 March 2012; the names of the winners will remain confidential and exposed at the opening of the exhibition. The 25 artworks that are selected will be exhibited at Lawangwangi, Bandung, in March/April 2012.
Sale
The 25 Artworks will be offered for sale. Pricing will be decided through discussion with each artist or his/her manager and is based on the current exhibition price for each artwork. The final decision of the price, however, is the right of the organizer. Each of the finalists will receive 10 Million Rupiah no matter whether his/her artwork will be sold or not. All proceeds of the sale will go to the endowment fund dedicated to execution and continuation of BaCAA.
